In People Music, The Mines have compiled a short-length album that expresses a genuine
self-reflection of who they are, and what they long to eventually be. Whether it's
through a story in the U2-like epic, "Run Home," or the conflict-filled opener,
"Valley," the craving of simply understanding life is present throughout. It is
clearly evident in the mesmerizing ballad, "Atlantis." Bassist/Singer Ethan Nickerson
sings, "Cause this is not my home, still it's all I've known. Sometimes it's all
I think I know. I swear a man can change, cause there is something strange that
I can feel beneath my soul."
The inner journey doesn't end there. The album concludes
with one final exhale, the delicate lament, "Grace." Here, the listener finds themselves
amidst a crescendo of dreamy atmospherics, feeling that ‘everything's going to be
alright.’ People Music, from beginning to end, is laced with tight harmonies, lyrical
depth and just plain awe-inspiring beauty. The emotion, and honesty, is truly infectious.
This EP is assured to please the indie/pop/rock lover's ear.
Revue Magazine
From the stabbing guitar feedback that sets its navigational course to the ethereal
reflection pool at its final destination, Grand Rapids rock quartet The Mines’ second
release is indicative of the journey behind the mellowing and maturation of the
songcraft which they brought to the fore with their first release, Metropolis (2006).
Lyrical portraiture and textural mid-tempo rock music create the basis for the effort,
leaving plenty of sonic space in a genre fraught with busy-ness and exaggerated
pop-rock instrumentation. A slight foray into odd-meter on the penultimate track
augments the collection of straightforward songs.
